No. 3 WashU Women’s Tennis Finishes as National Runner-Up, Falls to No. 4 Wesleyan in Title Match

Box Score CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The No. 3 Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team finished as the NCAA Division III runner-up, falling to No. 4 Wesleyan 4-1 in the title match. WashU finishes the season with an impressive 21-4 record.
 
This marked just the second time in program history that the Bears reached the national title match, as WashU advanced to the final day for the second year in a row.
 
Doubles
Wesleyan won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
 
No. 1 junior Eleanor Archer and sophomore Caitlin Bui fell to Leila Epstein and Lucinda Gatsiounis 6-4 at No. 1 doubles while first-year Lily Brecknock and sophomore Sam Slowik lost to Kendall Smith and Mariia Kornilova 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.
 
No. 10 senior Eliana Hanna and sophomore Ally Lin beat Lara Afolayanka and Sarah Youngberg 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
 
Singles
Wesleyan won the first singles point as Youngberg defeated senior Amber Edmonds 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
 
No. 21 Bui made it a 2-1 match with a win over No 9 Afolayanka 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 singles.
 
Lin fell to No. 31 Kornilova 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles for a 3-1 Wesleyan edge.
 
Wesleyan clinched the match at No. 2 singles as No. 19 Archer fell to No. 20 Agnes Guggenheim 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
 
No. 5 Hanna won her first set at No. 1 singles 7-6 (7-5) over No. 25 Epstein before losing the second set 6-3. She was trailing 3-2 in the third set at the conclusion of the match.
 
Senior Nina Moravek won her first set at No. 6 singles 6-4 before losing the second set 7-6 (7-1). The third set was tied 1-1 when Wesleyan clinched.
