Box Score St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team wrapped up ITA Regionals on Sunday afternoon. The three-day regional was hosted by the Bears at Tao Tennis Center and Dwight Davis Tennis Center.
Singles – Main Draw
Junior
Karen Gao made the deepest run for the Bears in the main bracket, falling in a three-set semifinal match to Chicago's Miranda Yuan. Gao fell 7-6 (7-2) in the first set but came back to win the second set 7-6 (10-8). Yuan, however, claimed the third and final set 7-5 to advance to the final. It will be an all-Chicago final between Yuan and Sylwia Mikos.
Gao won her first match in the Round of 64 against North Park's Hanna Zethreus 6-3, 6-0 before beating Wittenerg's Caroline Sproule 6-1, 6-4 in the Round of 32. Gao then defeated Otterbein's Erin Storrer 6-0, 6-2 in the Round of 16 and downed Case Western Reserve's Hannah Kassaie 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in the quarterfinal.
Katherine Johnston defeated Franciscan University of Steubenville 6-0, 6-0 in the Round of 64 but ultimately fell to Denison's Sydney Cianciola 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 in the Round of 32.
Nina Moravek won her first two matches, starting with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Trine's Eva Morales in the Round of 64. She then defeated John Carrol's Mia Zivkovic 6-1, 6-1 in the Round of 32 before falling to Case Western Reserve's Lily McCloskey 7-6 (10-8), 2-6, 6-3 in the Round of 16.
Sophia Huynh defeated Augustana's Lily Schoeck 6-1, 6-1 in the Round of 64 and moved on to beat Denison's Monique Brual 6-1,3-6, 6-1 in the Round of 32. She ultimately lost to Chicago's Shianna Guo 6-4, 6-1 in the Round of 16.
Carolyn Tsung lost to Kenyon's Shadia Amado Aguad in the Round of 64. She went on to win her first match in the consolation bracket, defeating Saint Mary's College's Lucille Chamberlin 6-3, 6-0. Following a bye in the Consolation Round of 32, Tsung lost to Case Western Reserve's Katalina Wang 6-2, 6-2 in the consolation Round of 16.
Singles – Blue Draw
Anke Patel won her opening match against Saint Mary's College's Kathleen McLeod 6-1, 6-2 in the Round of 16. She lost to DePauw's Valerie Doherty 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
Singles – Red Draw
Natalie Muldowney defeated Franciscan's Claire Cardie 6-3, 7-5 in the opening Round of 16 before falling to Kenyon's Eleni Dakos 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Singles – Green Draw
First-year
Hallie Jeffers had a bye in the opening round of the green draw, heading right to the quarterfinal where she defeated DePauw's Kiley Shaw 6-3, 6-0. Jeffers lost to Case Western Reserve's Nina Hoog 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinal.
Doubles – Main Draw
Gao and
Eliana Hanna reached the semifinal of the main doubles bracket, starting with a bye in the first round of play. The pair went on to defeat Denison's Peyton Oda and Sofia Zafiropulos 8-2 and moved on to beat Case Western Reserve's Radha Patel and Katalina Wang 8-3 in the Round of 16. Gao and Hanna topped Chicago's Nicole Geller and Lauren Khao 8-2 in the quarterfinal before ending their run in the semifinal with a 8-1 loss to Chicago's Shianna Guo and Sylwia Mikos.
Moravek and Ainsley Heidebreder had a bye in the first round and defeated Otterbein's Olivia Eckels and Lillia Walter 8-0 in the Round of 32. The pair ended their run in the Round of 16 with a 8-5 loss to Chicago's Yuan and Brooke Pedersen.
Tsung and
Maggie Yang lost to Case Western Reserve's Anna Kan and Nina Hoog 8-5 in the Round of 64, falling into the consolation bracket, which they won. To start, they went on to beat Augustana's Lily Schoeck and Hannah Colbert 8-2 and topped DePauw's Kiley Shaw and Sonal Matta 8-5 in the consolation Round of 16 8-5. The duo won in a walkover against Transylvania's Katherine Taylor and Grace Gardner. In the semifinal, Tsung and and Yang beat Greenville's Mireia Birosta and Addison Brannon in another walkover and ultimately defeated fellow WashU team Johnston and Jeffers 8-5.
After getting a bye in the opening round, Johnston and Jeffers fell to North Park's Teodora Kralijevic and Hanna Zethreus 8-7 (16-14). They beat Saint Mary's College's Alayna Campbell and Emma Kealy 8-2 in the consolation Round of 32 and then defeated Lake Forest's MJ Campos and Margaret Bugnacki 8-0 in the consolation Round of 16. Johnston and Jeffers beat North Central's Kensington Payne and Abigail Penados in a walkover in the quarterfinal and went on to beat Kenyon's Sai Dhanvi Lalasa Nagireddy and Shadia Amado Aguad 8-5 in the semifinal.
