Box Score St. Louis, Mo., September 7, 2021 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team won it's third-straight game on Tuesday evening with a 3-1 victory over Webster University.
It is the first time since 2016 that the Bears have won three in a row to open the season.
The Bears scored the first goal of the game with just 30 seconds remaining in the half. When a Webster player was whistled for a foul in the box, the Bears were awarded a penalty kick. Junior Sergio Rivas converted the penalty kick, finding the top right corner, to put WashU up 1-0 going into the half.
WashU scored quickly coming out of the break, in the 49th minute. Sophomore Owen Culver netted his second goal of the season on a pass from first-year Eugene Heger giving the Bears a 2-0 advantage.
In the 53rd minute, the Gorloks pulled within one goal as Carlos Llamas scored on a short cross from Aamahn Murvin.
More than 20 minutes went by before the Bears added an insurance goal in the 75th minute. Rivas took the ball and made it through two defenders before firing off a shot past a diving Jacob Klevorn in goal. Rivas now has four goals on the season to lead WashU's offense.
The Bears controlled much of the pace of the game, registering 17 total shots – 9 in the first half and 8 in the second half – compared to Webster's six shots. WashU also had six total corners, three in each half, while the Gorloks did not have any corners.
WashU is back in action on Saturday for the third game of a three-game homestand. The Bears will host No. 12 North Park at 4 p.m. in a double-header with the women's team. WashU and North Park have not faced each other in men's soccer since 2012 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
