Box Score St. Louis, Mo., September 24, 2021 – The No. 3 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team scored two second-half goals to defeat Wheaton, 2-0, on Friday afternoon. The Bears are now 6-0-1 on the year.
After a scoreless first half, WashU broke the deadlock with a goal in the 60th minute. Senior Ariana Miles drilled a shot towards goal that went through goalkeeper Lauren Ketchum's fingertips. Sophomore Tyler Wilson was there to net her fourth goal of the year and give the Bears a 1-0 edge.
Less than 10 minutes later in the 69th minute, senior Emily Kaufman scored her second goal of the year, netting a penalty kick following a foul in the box.
Statistically, WashU dominated Wheaton, outshooting the Thunder 25-4, 13 of which were on goal. The Bears also recorded 10 corner kicks to Wheaton's one.
Things started out relatively evenly in the opening minutes, before the Bears took control of the field for the majority of the game.
It was Wheaton that put the first shot on goal of the game, as Carlye Fatum put a ball towards net in the seventh minute, which was saved by goalkeeper Sidney Conner. That proved to be one of only two shots on goal the Thunder recorded.
The Bears pressed the Thunder's defense the entire game, with several chances before ultimately putting in a goal.
In the 17th minute, WashU had one of its best chances as Jess Shapiro rocketed a ball towards goal, but it deflected off the crossbar.
The Bears opened the second half with another great chance, this time from first-year Gaelen Clayton, which hit the post. Miles had three chances in a row for WashU, but the first sailed wide, the next was saved by Ketchum and the third was blocked by a Wheaton defender.
With just 20 seconds remaining on the clock, Conner made her second save of the day to preserve her clean sheet, stopping a shot from Wheaton's Sarah Max.
The Bears are back in action on Sunday afternoon at Rose-Hulman in one final non-conference tune-up before beginning UAA play next weekend. Kickoff at Rose-Hulman is slated for 1:30 p.m.
