Box Score

Memphis, Tenn., September 19, 2021 – The No. 5 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team defeated DePauw, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Rhodes College Challenge Tournament. With the victory, the Bears improve to 5-0-1 on the year following a 2-0 weekend.

Although it was DePauw that struck first, the Bears went on to score four unanswered goals en route to the win. The Tigers scored just 13:07 in, as Whitney Wells found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.

WashU, however, pulled even in the 36th minute as first-year Nicole Gulati netted a pass from Tyler Wilson for her second goal of the season.

The Bears scored what was ultimately the game-winner in the 66th minute, as senior Ariana Miles scored her second goal of the season to give the Bears a 2-1 edge.

Just five minutes later WashU struck again, as Miles took a pass from Gabbie Cesarone to score her second goal of the day and put the Bears up 3-1.

With just under four minutes left to play, the Bears continued to push on the offensive end, adding another goal in the 87th minute, this time from Jolie Carl.

The Bears had a lot of scoring opportunities throughout the game. Despite the early goal from the Tigers, WashU took control from the opening whistle, putting its first shot on-frame in the second minute, as a try from Anna Viscovich was saved by DePauw goalkeeper Emma St. John.

Following a WashU corner kick, Riley Alvarez got a head on the ball in the 17th minute, which was also saved by St. John. In the 37th minute, Wilson also sent a header to goal, which was saved. With just eight seconds left in the first half, first-year Sara Gianotti put a shot on-frame, which was stopped by St. John.

Out of the gate in the second half, Gulati registered a shot on-frame in the 50th minute followed by another Giannotti attempt in the 55th, both saved by St. John.

Miles had a chance at a hat trick in the 69th minute, sending a shot in and as the time ticked down in the 84th minute, Miles had a chance again but both shots were stopped by St. John.

Statistically, WashU dominated DePauw, registering 22 shots – 13 of which were on goal – to the Tigers' one. The Bears also tallied 15 corner kicks while DePauw did not have any.

WashU returns to action on Friday with a 3 p.m. home game against Wheaton. The game will be part of a double-header with the men's team, which takes on UW-Whitewater at 7 p.m.
