No. 4 Women's Soccer Dominates Carthage

St. Louis, Mo., September 12, 2021 – The Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team handed Carthage a 7-1 loss at home on Saturday.

The Bears improve to 2-0-1 on the season following a dominant offensive showing.

Just 9:56 into the game, WashU put its first goal on the board, as sophomore Anna Viscovich scored her first career goal. The ball was crossed and following a shuffle in front the goal, Viscovich capitalized and found the back of the net.

Less than two minutes later, the Bears added a second goal, this time from junior Riley Alvarez. She took a short cross from senior Jess Shapiro and chipped the ball in past the goalkeeper to give WashU a 2-0 edge.

Carthage scored its lone goal of the game in the 20th minute to cut the lead in half, as Amelia Price scored on a cross from Grace Robinson.

The Bears added one more goal before the half, in the 39th minute. First-year Sara Giannotti scored her first career goal, putting in a cross from senior Erin Flynn.

WashU wasted no time in its attack to open the second half, scoring just 20 seconds in. Sophomore Tyler Wilson scored her first career goal as the ball was deflected by the keeper. Wilson then converted as the goalkeeper was still scrambling, putting the Bears up 4-1.

In the 56th minute, Shapiro took a short pass from junior Jolie Carl, made a move around defenders and fired it in, putting WashU up, 5-1.

In the 71st minute, Carthage committed a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Senior Emily Kaufman drilled the ball into the top right corner, past goalkeeper Sara Lieffrig, who was diving left.

Giannotti scored her second goal of the game in the 80th minute, as she took a short pass from first-year Eve Kubala and made a quick move around a Carthage defender to net the ball and give the Bears a 7-1 advantage.

Statistically, the Bears dominated Carthage, registering 26 shots including 16 on goal, while the Firebirds had just two shots, both of which were on-frame.

Junior goalkeeper Katie Stender-Moore notched one save on the day while Lieffrig had nine for Carthage.

WashU is back in action on Wednesday, September 15 as it hosts Millikin at 7:30 p.m.
