No. 7 Men's Soccer Moves into First Place in UAA Standings, Record Fourth Straight Shutout

Cleveland, Ohio, October 31, 2021 – The No. 7 Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team collected its fourth straight shutout with a 2-0 road victory at Case Western Reserve University on Sunday afternoon. 

WashU has logged nearly 400 minutes on the field without giving up a goal and improve to 11-2-1, (4-1-1, UAA) on the season.

In addition, the Bears currently sit in first place in the UAA standings after an overtime loss from NYU earlier this afternoon. A win next Saturday will give WashU their first UAA championship since 2012, when they earned a share of the title. 

The Bears finish off the month of October with six shutouts in total, along with outscoring its opponents by a 12-2 margin.

WashU compiled eight shots in the first 45 minutes of action, with early chances off a free kick and a header attempt from Sergio Rivas.

After neither team could break through in the first 30 minutes of the contest, Owen Culver notched his second goal of the week in the 34th minute of action on a goal scored off an intercepted pass into the CWRU box.

Culver has recorded seven goals this season, tied with Sergio Rivas for the most goals for the Bears this year.

WashU's defense had another great outing and limited the Spartans' opportunities with only two shots landing on goal throughout the duration of the match.

CWRU moved the ball downfield several times, but the Bears were able to clear the ball out of danger and get possession back into their favor.

Leading 1-0 at halftime, WashU continued to wear down the Spartans as they applied more pressure and fired off six shots in the second half.

Armando Sanchez-Conde extended the Bears' lead in the 59th minute on an unassisted goal from over 20-yards out. Sanchez-Conde struck a strong, looping ball over the CWRU goalkeeper who was off his line and was unable to save it.

The senior has registered four goals scored this year.

Goalkeeper Matt Martin notched his sixth shutout in UAA play and posted two saves in the win. The Cupertino, Calif. Is just six saves shy of achieving 100 career saves.

In total, WashU finished with 14 shots, with Culver recording a team-high four shots and three shots-on-goal.

Case Western threatened to score late in the final four minutes of the match, but the shot landed high over the crossbar as the Bears' preserved the shutout.

WashU will look to claim the UAA title next Saturday as they close out the regular season at home on November 6 at 7:00 p.m. against UChicago.
