Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa., October 29, 2021 – The No. 3 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team officially clinched the University Athletic Association (UAA) title on Friday evening following the Bears' 1-0 victory at Carnegie Mellon.
Due to UChicago and Case Western's contest resulting in a tie, the Bears earn their third consecutive outright Association title. Additionally, this marks the sixth consecutive time they have won or shared the title.
WashU extends its winning streak to 12 and improves to 13-0-1 on the season, marking the third time since 2013 where the Bears have held a winning streak of at least 12 games.
The 2021 Bears have collected nine shutouts this season and are still perfect at 5-0 in UAA play.
Friday night's contest was competitive from the start as neither team could find the early momentum.
The Bears' defense held off three shot attempts from CMU in the opening 10 minutes as they looked to gain the possession back in their favor.
Tyler Wilson's shot in the 21st minute gave the Bears a great look on goal, but the shot was saved by Carnegie Mellon.
In the second half, WashU broke the scoreless tie halfway through the action after Jess Shapiro scored off a shot from 10-yards out at the near post, following a defensive clearance from the Tartans.
The senior from Atlantic Beach, Fla. has logged four goals this year, including two game-winning goals.
After Shapiro's goal, the Bears were on the defensive, as they recorded only one shot the rest of the way and tried to preserve the victory.
Carnegie Mellon had two opportunities late that resulted in a free kick that landed high, and a shot saved by goalkeeper Sidney Conner in the final three minutes.
Statistically, WashU was outshot by CMU on a 13-7 margin. The Bears' attack was led by Kate Flynn, who tallied a team-best two shots.
Sidney Conner, who was named UAA Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday had another top-notch performance in goal, along with the rest of the Bears' defense, as she logged three saves on the way to her eighth shutout this season.
WashU is back in play at Case Western Reserve on Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. EST.
