Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa., October 29, 2021 – The No. 7 Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team won its third straight contest with a 3-0 shutout victory on Friday evening at Carnegie Mellon.
The Bears jump to 10-2-1, (3-1-1 UAA), marking their best start through 13 games since the 2011 season. More importantly, with the victory, WashU moves ahead into sole possession of second place in the UAA standings.
In the month of October, the Bears have outscored their opponents by an impressive 10-2 margin and have shutout their past three opponents.
Additionally, Friday's victory marks WashU's third consecutive win over Carnegie Mellon.
WashU got the scoring started in the as Owen Culver notched his sixth goal of the year in the 21st minute of play.
Shiv Lamba provided the assist as Culver nailed a shot into the far post to put the Bears on top.
WashU would add another goal in the 38th minute to take a 2-0 lead after Nolan Wolf scored off a give-and-go pass in the middle of the field from Eugene Heger.
Wolf maneuvered his way into the box and delivered a shot into the back of the net, giving the Bears a 2-0 cushion heading into the half.
Wolf has achieved three goals scored this season, including goals scored in back-to-back contests.
The Bears would record their third goal of the night late into the second half in the 74th minute to put the game out of reach.
Freshman Eugene Heger tallied his first goal of his WashU career off a rebound from a shot attempt from Owen Culver, which nearly went in, but hit the post. Heger precisely followed the rebound and buried a shot past the CMU keeper.
Carnegie Mellon held the edge in corner kicks and also finished with 13 shots, placing five shots-on-goal, but WashU made the most of its chances, registering nine shots in total with four shots-on-goal on their way to victory.
Culver led the offense with a team-high three shots, while goalkeeper Matt Martin recorded five saves and collected his fourth shutout in UAA action.
The Bears return to action at Case Western Reserve University on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. EST.
