No. 3 Women's Soccer Shuts Out Illinois Wesleyan in Non-Conference Match

Box Score

Bloomington, Ill., October 20, 2021 – The No. 3 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team won its 11th-straight game on Wednesday evening with a 1-0 victory over Illinois Wesleyan.

The Bears are now 12-0-1 on the year while Illinois Wesleyan falls to 6-7-1.

WashU broke through for what would ultimately be the only goal scored in the game in the 43rd minute. Julia Miller sent a ball into the 18 where Jessica Greven was there to finish. The goal marks Greven's third of the season.

The Bears fired off 16 shots, including eight on goal while the defense held Illinois Wesleyan to just six total shots with three on frame.

WashU wasted no time in putting pressure on the Titans' defenders and goalkeeper, as Erin Flynn put a shot on goal just 18 seconds into play. Gabby Kogler followed that up with a shot at the 1:45 mark, which were both saved.

Illinois Wesleyan returned the pressure and challenged WashU goalkeeper Sidney Conner twice within a minute as Lauren Shanks and Erin Peck both put balls on target. Conner made the play on both shots to give WashU the possession.

Jolie Carl had shots on target in the 18th and 30th minutes and Kogler put one on frame in the 33rd minute, which were all saved by goalkeeper Maria Fields.

Illinois Wesleyan nearly had the equalizer in the 56th minute. The Titans earned a free kick right outside the box and Liza Matimore fired off a shot which went around the defensive wall, but Conner made a big play and sent the ball over the crossbar to keep the Titans off the board.

Jess Shapiro nearly scored an insurance goal in the 62nd minute, but an Illinois Wesleyan team save on the goal line thwarted the Bears' attempt.

Greven put another ball on target in the 64th minute, which was the last shot on goal for either team for the remainder of the game.

Greven finished with three shots – two on goal – and Carl had two shots on goal for the Bears.

In the net, Conner made three saves for her conference-leading seventh shutout of the season. She also leads the UAA with a 0.37 goals-against average.

The Bears now have a breather until they travel to Carnegie Mellon on Friday, October 29 and Case Western Reserve on Sunday, October 31 for a pair of UAA matches.
