Box Score St. Louis, Mo., October 17, 2021 – The No. 3 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team won its tenth-straight game on Sunday afternoon, topping Brandeis, 2-1, in a UAA match.
The Bears are now 11-0-1 on the year with a 4-0 mark in conference action while Brandeis falls to 6-4-2 and 1-3 in the UAA.
Prior to the match, the Bears celebrated their eight seniors – Gabbie Cesarone, Erin Flynn, Emily Kaufman, Ariana Miles, Julia Miller, Jess Shapiro, Kally Wendler and Mary Frances West.
For the second time this weekend, Flynn scored both of WashU's goals, totaling four in two games.
After a scoreless first half, the Bears broke the deadlock in the 66th minute. Following a Bears' corner kick, there was a scramble in front of the goal where several WashU players got a foot on the ball, but it was ultimately Flynn who found the back of the net.
Flynn did it again for the Bears in the 73rd minute to give WashU a 2-0 lead. She took a short pass off a free kick from Kaufman and fired a hard shot from the right side of the box to score.
Less than six minutes later, in the 79th minute, Brandeis cut WashU's lead to one goal, as Sydney Lenhart took a pass from Yasla Ngoma and scored.
Offensively, WashU finished with 13 shots, 10 of which were on goal.
Things started slow for both teams, and it was Gabby Kogler who put the first shot on goal for WashU, but her shot in the 22nd minute was saved by Brandeis goalkeeper Hannah Bassan. The Bears had just one more shot on frame in the first half, taken by Riley Alvarez, which was saved.
Tyler Wilson opened the second half with a shot on goal just three minutes in and Flynn sent one toward goal in the 54th minute, which were both stopped by the goalkeeper. The Bears had two more on-target shots prior to Flynn's first goal. Flynn played a ball in the 62nd minute and Cesarone had a shot in the 64th minute, but both were stopped. The Bears' final push for a third goal in the 84th minute was stopped.
Defensively, the Bears stood strong to keep Brandeis off the board for nearly 79 minutes, and prevent the tying goal to be scored. WashU's defense had many solid plays on the day, including a Cesarone header clear out on a Brandeis free kick in the 40th minute.
In goal, Sidney Conner faced four shots on goal and made three saves. She made her first save on a Lauren Mastandrea shot in the 24th minute and followed with another save on a Daria Bakhtiari ball in the 31st minute. Conner made her third and final save in the 38th minute on a Juliette Carreiro shot.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, October 20 with a road game at Illinois Wesleyan at 5 p.m. Next weekend, WashU heads to Carnegie Mellon on Friday and Case Western Reserve on Saturday for two UAA matches.
