Box Score St. Louis, Mo., October 15, 2021 – The No. 3 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team defeated NYU on Friday evening, 2-0, under the lights at Francis Olympic Field.
With the win, the Bears have won nine-straight games to improve to 10-0-1 on the season and 3-0 in UAA play. WashU now holds a 19-4-2 advantage in the all-time series against NYU.
WashU wasted no time in getting on the board, as senior Erin Flynn scored her second goal of the season just 1:35 into play. She took the ball up the left sideline and fired a long shot into the opposite side of the net to score what would ultimately be the game-winning goal.
Flynn had the hot foot again as the clock ticked down in the first half. In the 39th minute, Flynn took a pass from Gaelen Clayton and fired from 25 yards out into the right side of the net, putting the Bears up 2-0 over the Violets.
Defensively, the Bears pressured the NYU offense, limiting the Violets to nine total shots with just one shot on goal. WashU's tough defensive line continually won balls in the air and battled to make clears, thwarting any potential chances NYU attempted.
Offensively, WashU totaled 13 shots with nine on goal as well as four corner kicks.
Following Flynn's goal to open the game, Anna Viscovich put a shot on-frame in the seventh minute which was saved by NYU goalkeeper Riley Felsher. Shots from Sara Giannotti and Jessica Greven in the 36th and 38th minute, respectively, were also stopped. Flynn nearly had a first-half hat trick on a breakaway run, but Felsher made a diving save in the 40th minute.
The Bears kept up the pressure in the second half, as Jessica Shapiro fired off an on-frame shot on the 53rd minute, which was saved, and followed up with another shot in the 54th minute, which was blocked by a Violets' defender.
Giannotti put a shot on goal in the 68th minute and Flynn had one final chance in the 89th minute, but both shots were stopped by the goalkeeper.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sidney Conner finished with her sixth shutout of the season after saving the lone Violets' shot on goal. That shot was taken in the 70th minute by NYU's Julie Beedle.
The Bears are back at home on Sunday, October 17 against Brandeis at 11 a.m. They then hit the road for three games before wrapping up the regular season on Saturday, November 6 against Chicago.
