Box Score St. Louis, Mo., October 10, 2021 – The No. 9 Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team battled No. 14 Emory to a 0-0 draw on Sunday afternoon in UAA play.
Emory recorded 19 shots to the Bears eight, but the WashU defense stood strong and did not allow a goal. WashU finished the day with eight shots, including four on goal.
The Eagles recorded the first two shots of the game as Nate Sampson sent a ball towards goal in the 10th minute, which was saved by senior goalkeeper Matt Martin. Emory's Alejandro Gomez got off a shot in the 12th minute, but it was blocked by a Bears' defender. In the 23rrd minute, Martin made another save on a Josh Berman shot.
WashU had its first shot of the game in the 27th minute, from Sergio Rivas, which was saved by Emory goalkeeper Jack Hudson.
Martin came up with another save in the 30th minute, this time on a Will Tichy Ball. Emory made one final push in the first half as Madison Conduah sent a header in, which was also stopped by Martin.
John Daniels opened the second half with a shot on goal in the 48th minute, but Hudson made the play. Martin then stopped another ball for the Bears on a Tichy shot in the 59th minute.
Lucas Ragula put a shot on-frame for WashU in the 64th minute, which was saved by Hudson. In the 65th minute, Owen Culver had his shot blocked by an Emory defender. Aidan Ashrafi had a chance for the Bears in the 79th minute, but Hudson was there to make the stop again.
Martin ended regulation with a save, stopping another shot from Tichy in the 89th minute.
In the first overtime, Emory had four shots while the Bears did not have any. Martin made saves on two Berman shots in the 92nd minute, and the other two shots for the Eagles were not on goal. Martin finished the day with eight saves, just one off from his season high.
The Bears are back home on Friday, October 15 with an 8 p.m. game against NYU. WashU then hosts Brandeis on Sunday, October 17 at 1:30 p.m.
