WashU Tops Carnegie Mellon to Remain Perfect at Home

St. Louis, Nov. 1, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team tied a season-high in goals scored in a 3-1 victory over Carnegie Mellon University Friday at Francis Olympic Field in St. Louis.

WashU snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 7-6-1 and 2-3 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Carnegie Mellon fell to 6-7-1 and 2-3 in the conference. The Bears sit in a three-way tie for fifth place in the UAA standings.

WashU outshot Carnegie Mellon 18-16, but the Tartans had the 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. 

Senior goalkeeper Connor Mathes (3-3) picked up the win in goal tying a career-high with six saves. Mathes made two saves in the final 2:20, including a stop on a point-blank shot in the 89th minute

CMU struck first with a goal just 1:00 into the contest, but WashU answered right back in the 14th minute. Junior Will Sproule took advantage of a misplay by CMU goalkeeper Alex Singh to find the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman Shiv Lamba had the assist after a long pass landed on the foot of Sproule. 

In the 28th minute, freshman Julian Gancman sent a cross that went over the head of Sproule to sophomore Nolan Wolf, who sent a header into the back of the net.

CMU outshot WashU 7-6 in the opening half.

Freshman Sergio Rivas added an insurance goal in the 52nd minute after he scored off his own rebound. The goal for Rivas was the first of his career.

WashU hosts Case Western Reserve University on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 1:30 p.m. Prior to the contest WashU will honor its four seniors: Mathes, Jack NewmanIsaac Plutzer and Makio Yamamoto.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: Carnegie Mellon leads the all-time series 17-14-2, but the Bears have won the last two meetings … The Bears are 5-0 at home this season and 10-1-1 on their home turf in the last two seasons … The win for head coach Joe Clarke was the 453rd of his career.
