Men's Soccer Blanks Wartburg 2-0 for First Win

St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 14, 2018 – Freshman Aidan Ryan scored the first goal of his career and added an assist to lead the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Wartburg College Friday in St. Louis.

Ryan, who also made his first career start, assisted on the game-winning goal and scored an insurance goal in the 81stminute after beating four Wartburg defenders.

WashU picked up its first win of the season to improve to 1-3, while Wartburg dropped to 1-4.

Junior Connor Mathes (1-3) was active in goal making two saves and picked up his first career shutout. WashU outshot Wartburg 16-9 for the contest.

The Bears had the 10-3 shot advantage in the first half, and found the net in the ninth minute. Ryan settled a ball at midfield, made a nice run before sending a pass to senior Ryan Sproule who quickly fired a shot to the far corner. The goal was Sproule's 22ndof his career.

WashU hosts Fontbonne University (2-3) on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU and Wartburg have split three all-time meetings 1-1-1 …  The Bears have outshot all four opponents … Head coach Joe Clarke picked up his 440thcareer victory, 25thmost all-time in college soccer … The game-winning goal was Sproule's ninth of his career.
