Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 12 Men's Soccer Falls In Sweet 16 Matchup Against Trinity (TX)

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 12 Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team looked to reach the Elite 8 for the first time since 2007 when they faced off against No. 5 Trinity (TX), the same team that eliminated the Bears in the Elite 8 that year. Unfortunately for WashU, the Tigers earned the same result as Trinity picked up a 3-0 win over the Bears on Saturday afternoon at Francis Olympic Field.

The Tigers used a stingy defense that allowed just five shots all game while their offense was able to tally 10 shots of its own.

Both teams were able to maintain control of the ball for several minutes on their offensive side of the pitch early on in the first half before Trinity broke through in the 31st minute with the first goal of the contest at 30:38.

Heading into the break down by just one goal, WashU looked to an offense that scored often throughout the season during the second half of their contests.

Neither team could find the back of the net for nearly 20 minutes in the second half before the Tigers added an insurance goal that squeaked by a defender into the far left side of the goal at 64:07.

Trinity added their final goal in the 82nd minute off a quick rebound in front of the goal at 81:45.

Senior Zach Susee and junior Ethan Wirtschafter each had a pair of shots for the Bears, while junior James Whitehurst notched the fifth shot for WashU. Junior Cal L'Hommedieu once again played all 90 minutes in goal, and every minute this season for the Bears, making a pair of saves.

WashU concludes the season with a 14-4-1 record. It was the most wins for the Bears since the 2011 team went 15-4-1. The team will look to the off-season to get even stronger and make another deep push for a national championship.
