No. 1 WashU Runs Past Westminster in NCAA First Round

St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 10, 2018 – The No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team scored early and often in a 5-0 win over Westminster College (Mo.) Saturday in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Division III Tournament Saturday at Francis Field in St. Louis.

WashU improved to 18-0 with the win, while Westminster ends its season with a 12-4-3 mark. The 18-game winning streak for WashU is the longest in school history.

The Bears take on the winner of Mount St. Joseph University and Illinois Wesleyan University Sunday at 6 p.m. in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

"The win tonight was a great way to start the NCAA tournament. We are happy to play well against a quality opponent," said WashU head coach Jim Conlon. "I'm proud of the effort of all the women tonight to help a complete team effort." 

WashU dominated the first half of play outshooting Westminster 27-0 and had the 9-0 advantage in corner kicks. Junior Taylor Cohen scored off a give and go from sophomore Ellie Moreland in the 29th minute, and then senior Jessica Ridderhoff scored off a header from 10 yards out to make it 2-0 at 35:00.

The Bears put the game out of reach after Marissa Kalkar scored the first of two goals after a give and go in the box with classmate Erin Flynn in the 40th minute.

Sophomore Caitlin Reice netted the first goal of her career off a corner kick from senior Caroline Dempsey in the 50th minute, and then Kalkar rounded out the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 82n dminute.

Sophomore Emma Greenfield (71:00) and freshman Mary Frances West (19:00) combined to play 90 minutes in goal as WashU's defense recorded their 14thshutout of the season.

WashU outshot Westminster 48-0 and had a 16-0 advantage in corner kicks.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU and Westminster met for the first time in school history … The Bears are one of two remaining undefeated teams in Division III (Centre) … WashU is 24-2-2 all-time at home in NCAA play … Westminster was making its second all-time NCAA Tournament appearance … WashU has a 36-14-8 record in NCAA Tournament play … The Bears have allowed four goals in 18 games.
