Box Score St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 26, 2018 – Junior forward Taylor Cohen snuck past the defense and scored the game-winning goal with less than a minute left to lead the No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over No. 13 Brandeis University Friday at Francis Field in St. Louis.
WashU improved to 15-0 and 5-0 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Brandeis dropped to 11-3 and 3-2 in the UAA.
WashU hosts New York University (9-4-3, 4-0-1 UAA) in a battle for first place in the conference on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The Violets upset No. 10 Chicago 1-0 on the road Friday.
Prior to the contest, the Bears will honor their eight seniors:Maggie Crist, Darcy Cunningham, Caroline Dempsey, Audrey Freeman, Jessica Kovach, Hannah Menard, Jessica Ridderhoff and Isabelle Tamburro.
Cohen, who is tied for the lead in the conference with 10 goals, took a pass from freshman Erin Flynn and beat the goalkeeper with a left-footed shot to the far corner. The goal for Cohen was the 32ndof her career, ninth most in school history.
WashU outshot Brandeis 8-3 in the opening half which saw neither time find the back of the net. Cunningham had a great chance in the 22ndminute when her free kick outside the 18 went off the crossbar.
In the 33rd minute, sophomore Katy Mockett fired a left-footed shot to the near post that was cleared off the line by Emily Thiem.
Cohen nearly scored the first goal in the 63rd minute but a chip off a cross deflected off the cross bar.
Sophomore goalkeeper Emma Greenfield (15-0) made one save and the WashU defense picked up its 11thshutout of the season.
WashU out Brandeis 20-3 and had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Bears did not allow a shot in the second half.
