Men's Soccer Rally Falls Short in Loss to Oglethorpe

Franklin, Tenn., Oct. 1, 2018 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team stepped out of conference play and suffered a 3-2 loss to Oglethorpe University Monday in Franklin, Tenn.

Oglethorpe won its fourth-straight game to improve to 5-2, while WashU had its five-match win streak snapped and fell to 5-4.

WashU outshot Oglethorpe 19-15 and had a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks.

The Bears trailed 3-1 at halftime, giving up three unanswered goals. Senior Ryan Sproule gave WashU the early lead with a goal in the seventh minute off a long cross from freshman Michael Gemmell.

The Stormy Petrels scored a pair of goals in a span of 6:01 to take the 2-1 advantage, and then found the back of the net in the 39thminute to make it 3-1.

The Bears had Oglethorpe on its heels the entire second half, and scored in the 65thminute to cut the lead in half. 

Freshman Nao Yanase intercepted a pass and made a run down the sideline before sending a pass to Sproule, who went straight to the goal. Sproule fired a shot that senior Marc VandenBerg got the rebound and put in the open net.

The Bears nearly tied it in the 85thminute when Sproule's header went off the crossbar after a perfectly placed corner kick from junior Jack Newman

Freshman Matt Martin (2-1) suffered the loss in goal allowing three goals with two saves in the first half. Junior Connor Mathes recorded a pair of saves in the second half as WashU kept Oglethorpe off the scoreboard.

WashU plays it first conference road game at No. 4 University of Rochester (7-1, 0-1 UAA) on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m. (ET).
