Men's Soccer Closes Out Season at No. 11 Chicago

Chicago, Ill., Nov. 4, 2017 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team closed out the 2017 season with a 2-1 loss at No. 11-ranked University of Chicago Saturday in Chicago.

Chicago improved to 16-2 and wrapped up the 2017 University Athletic Association (UAA) championship with a 6-1 conference mark. The Maroons also gained the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. WashU ended its season with a 7-7-2 mark, including a 1-5-1 record in the UAA.

Saturday's loss ended the career of WashU's seven seniors – Shadi Awad, Anthony Law, Kevin Maedomari, Colin McCune, Chris Rieger, Zach Virgilio and Andrew Zingone. This group complied an overall record of 37-22-11 (.607) in four seasons on the Danforth Campus, with a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances.

The Maroons jumped out in front 1-0 with a goal by Max Lopez in the 14th minute. The goal for Lopez was his conference-leading 16th of the season. Chicago made it 2-0 with a tally in the 32nd minute by Matthew Koh.

Chicago had an 8-4 advantage in shots in the opening half, as WashU did not register a shot on goal.

The Bears had a few scoring opportunities midway through the second half. Sophomore Makio Yamamoto fired a shot that went off the post, and then the rebound by Zingone went wide left.

Zingone found the back of the net with a header in the 86th minute off a double header from Awad and junior Ryan Sproule to cut the lead in half. Sproule nearly tied the game with a minute left but Chicago goalkeeper Aaron Katsimpalis came up with a big save.

Chicago outshot WashU 13-12, but the Bears had the 8-5 advantage in the second half. The Maroons also had the slight edge of 5-4 in corner kicks.

McCune (6-5-2) made five saves in goal in his final game with the Red and Green.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Chicago, 25-11-3, but the Maroons are riding a four-game unbeaten streak against the Bears … The goal for Zingone was his first of the season and fifth of his career. … WashU was 2-4-2 away from home this season.
