Mastroianni and No. 15 WashU Dominates No. 8 Brandeis

St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 16, 2016 – Junior Mia Mastroianni netted her first career goal in the 15th minute to lead the No. 15-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team to a convincing 2-0 win over No. 8-ranked Brandeis University Sunday in University Athletic Association (UAA) play at Francis Field in St. Louis.

WashU outshot Brandeis 32-3 for the game and had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

WashU improved to 10-2-2 and 2-1-1 in the UAA, while Brandeis suffered its second-consecutive defeat and dropped to 12-2-1, 2-2 in the UAA.

Senior Katie Chandler had two great opportunities in a 45-second span early in the first half, but Brandeis goalkeeper Alexis Grossman made a pair of saves.

Just a few minutes later, a shot by sophomore Darcy Cunningham was blocked and Mastroianni buried the rebound to the far corner to make it 1-0. WashU dominated play in the first 20 minutes outshooting Brandeis 11-1.

WashU had a 14-3 shot in advantage in the first half.

The Bears two opportunities in the 49th minute after junior Elise Brown's header off a corner kick was deflected, and then a shot by junior Mariana Alisio was cleared off the line for a team save.

A great effort by junior Gillian Myers led to the second goal of the match in the 66th minute. Myers sent a cross into the box that junior Megan Renken settled and fired a left-footed shot into the far corner to make it 2-0. The goal for Renken was the seventh of her career.

Senior goalkeeper Lizzy Crist made one save and picked up her 25th career shutout, tying the WashU all-time mark. Grossman made a school record 15 saves for Brandeis.

WashU closes out a four-game homestand against Principia College (3-9, 2-3 SLIAC) Thursday, Oct. 20 at 5:30 p.m.
