Box Score St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 29, 2015 – The No. 14-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team battled through rain and soggy conditions to win the Battle of Big Bend with a 7-0 win over Webster University Tuesday night at Francis Field in St. Louis.
WashU extended its winning streak to four games and improved to 6-1-2, while Webster suffered its fourth-straight loss and dropped to 1-7-2.
Senior Jack West had a goal and an assist in the first half as the Bears built a commanding 3-0 advantage. West controlled a serve and laid it off to junior Grant Baltes for the first goal of the game in the 15th minute.
West pushed the advantage to 2-0 in the 28th minute as West took advantage of a misplay by Webster goalkeeper Zach Horn and scored in the open net. The goal for West was his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Freshman Ryan Sproule pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 40th minute after junior Corey Meehan sent a cross into the box that was flicked by freshman Marc VandenBerg to Sproule for a one-time. WashU outshot Webster 8-3 in the first half.
Junior Nick Politan scored his first goal of the season in the 68th minute when he hammered home a cross from sophomore Andrew Zingone to make it 4-0. Junior Andrew Schmitt added two goals and Zingone had a late tally in the second half to round out the scoring.
WashU outshot Webster 21-7 and had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeepers Nick Tannenbaum and Daniel Geanon combined to secure the Bears' fourth-shutout of the season.
WashU opens University Athletic Association (UAA) play Sunday, Oct. 4, at home against the University of Rochester (4-2-2). Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series between the two teams 23-1-2 … The Bears have scored 16 of their 23 goals in the first half … The seven goals scored was the most since Sept. 1, 2010 (7-0 win vs. Webster) … The four-game win streak is the longest since 2011.
