Men's Soccer Plays Scoreless Draw with Birmingham Southern

St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 13, 2015 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team outplayed its opponent for the second-straight night but could not find the net in a 0-0 double overtime draw with Birmingham Southern College Sunday at Francis Field in St. Louis.

WashU outshot Birmingham Southern 25-4, and had a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Bears recorded 11 shots on goal in the tie.

WashU falls to 2-1-2, while Birmingham Southern remained unbeaten at 4-0-1.

The Bears controlled possession time for most of the first half, and registered the only three shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes. Birmingham Southern goalkeeper Marvin Castellanos made two saves in the first half, including a diving save in the 11th minute on a left-footed shot by senior Cole Davis.

Castellanos, who stands 6-foot-3, also made a diving save in the 27th minute after a header from freshman Ryan Sproule. The Bears had two other scoring opportunities late in the contest, as freshmen Marc VandenBerg and Kyle Perez each had shots that just trickled over the bar.

The Bears picked up the intensity in the second half with fresh legs on the field. In the 52nd minute, freshman Camilo Haller fired a shot from outside the box that was snagged by Castellanos. Sproule had another chance in the 82nd minute with a header off a corner, but Castellanos stopped the ball before it rolled over the line.

In the first overtime, sophomore Kevin Maedomari had the best scoring opportunity of the night for WashU as he got loose in the box and fired a shot inside the six that Castellanos stopped with his chest.

Junior goalkeeper Daniel Geanon made one save for WashU and picked up the second shutout of the season. Castellanos had 11 saves for Birmingham Southern, who has allowed just one goal in five games.

WashU opens a three-game road trip with a pair of games in California. The Bears take on Pomona-Pitzer Colleges Friday, Sept. 18, at 4 p.m. (PT) and California Lutheran University Sunday, Sept. 20, at 10:45 a.m. (PT).
