Box Score St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 30, 2015 – The No. 11-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team allowed three unanswered goals in the second half in a 3-1 loss to Carnegie Mellon University Friday night at Francis Field in St. Louis.
Carnegie Mellon won its second-straight game to improve to 10-2-3, 2-1-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while WashU had its three-game win streak snapped and dropped to 10-3-3, 2-2-1 in the UAA.
The Bears fell to fourth place in the UAA standings, and trail first-place Brandeis University by five points with two conference games remaining.
Carnegie Mellon held a 5-4 advantage in shots in the opening half, but WashU recorded the only shot on net in the 37th minute. Sophomore Thomas Hutchings settled a pass from freshman Ryan Sproule, and then got around a CMU defender and fired a perfectly-place left-footed shot into the far corner to make it 1-0.
The pace of play picked up to begin the second half, and CMU tied the game in the 54th minute after Greg Bellwoar headed home a free kick from Tristan Lockwood. Carnegie Mellon jumped ahead for good in the 71st minute after Anthony Gulli chipped junior goalkeeper Daniel Geanon.
William Webb netted his UAA-leading 13th goal of the season in the 80th minute to round out the scoring.
Alec Lam (1-0) played the final 51:11 in the net for CMU and picked up his first win of the season making a career-high six saves. She stopped back-to-back shots in the 47th minute by senior Jack West and Sproule to keep it a one-goal game.
Geanon (7-2-2) took the loss allowing three goals in 90 minutes played. WashU outshot Carnegie Mellon 13-11, and had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
WashU celebrates Senior Day on Sunday, Nov. 1, against Case Western Reserve University (12-3-1, 3-2 UAA). Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. at Francis Field.
BEAR NOTEBOOK: Carnegie Mellon leads the all-time series between the two teams 15-12-2, and the Tartans have won the last four meetings … The loss for WashU at home was its first of the season (3-1-3) … The Bears allowed three goals in a game for the first time since Nov. 9, 2013 – 4-3 win at Chicago.
