Katie Chandler Nets Hat Trick in 8-0 Win over Benedictine

St. Louis, Mo., September 7, 2014 – Sophomore Katie Chandler recorded a hat trick and added an assist to lead the No. 2-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team to an 8-0 win over Benedictine University (Ill.) Sunday afternoon at Francis Field in St. Louis.

Washington University improves its overall record to 5-0, while Benedictine falls to 0-4. The victory extended the Bears' unbeaten streak to 20 games dating back to the 2013 season.

Junior Olivia Lillegraven, who netted the game-winner in the 1-0 overtime win against Rhodes College Saturday, got the Bears on the scoreboard in the ninth minute when she took a pass from senior Lillie Toaspern and beat Benedictine goalkeeper Maddie Frye with a shot to the corner. The goal for Lillegraven was her team-leading fourth of the season.

Chandler took the game into her own hands scoring a pair of goals in a span of two minutes to put the game out of reach. She scored off a double assist from sophomore Allie Schiffman and Lillegraven in the 16th minute, and then took a pass from Toaspern and put a shot to the near corner to make it 3-0. The Bears outshot Benedictine 19-2 in the first half.

Toaspern made it 4-0 with a goal in the 51st minute on a give-and-go from Chandler, and then Chandler completed the hat trick in the 57th minute on Toaspern's third assist to push the lead to 5-0. Junior Liz Collins (56:49), freshman Mariana Alisio (76:15) and Schiffman (86:38) rounded out the scoring for the Bears.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nine Gerson recorded the Bear's fifth-straight shutout making two saves. The backline of senior Tessa Delaney, senior Tessa Klumpp, sophomore Hannah Rosenberg and sophomore Lexie Sprague has not allowed a goal in 455:42, and limited opponents to 13 shots on goal in five games played.

WUSTL outshot Benedictine 49-3 for the game, including 30-1 in the second half. The Bears also had a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Bears return to action Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Illinois Wesleyan University. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. in Bloomington, Ill.

Bear Notebook: This was the first meeting in school history between the two teams … Washington U. is 44-3-2 in the last three seasons … The Bears are off to a 5-0 start for the second-straight season and seventh time in school history … The Bears have a 60-9-4 (.849) record in the past seven seasons at home under head coach Jim Conlon … Lillegraven has scored three of the Bears' five game-winning goals this season, while Toaspern has three game-winning assists … Toaspern moved into fifth place in school history in assists (25) and points (93), and sixth in goals scored (34).
