No. 16 Men's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw at Dominican

Box Score

Chicago, Ill., Sept. 6, 2014 – The No. 16-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team had a one-goal lead slip away in the final 11 minutes of regulation, before playing to a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Dominican University Saturday.

The Bears dominated the possession in the first half, out-shooting Dominican 12-4, including a 6-0 advantage in shots on goal. In the eighth minute, the Bears had their first big scoring opportunity as senior Jonathan Lipsey got three shots in a matter of seconds. Lipsey's initial shot was saved by Dominican goalkeeper Gabriel Gongora, but the Stars were called for a foul in the box on Lipsey and the Bears were awarded a penalty kick. Gongora deflected the ensuing penalty kick back to Lipsey, but his shot was blocked to keep the score 0-0.

Gongora made five saves and the Bears had three other shots saved before sophomore Grant Baltes put Washington U. on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute. He found the back of the net with a shot from 20 yards out off an assist by sophomore Cole Davis to make it 1-0 in favor of the Bears. Washington U. kept the pressure on the remainder of the period to head to halftime with the one-goal lead.

The Stars came out more aggressively in the second half, recording their first shot on goal in the 51st minute, but the header was saved by sophomore Nick Tannenbaum to preserve the Bears' lead. Dominican continued to pressure the Bears, out-shooting them 7-2 in the first 32 minutes of the second period. In the 80th minute, the Stars scored the equalizer when Carmelo Abate sneaked a ball past Tannenbaum on the left side of the goal to even the score at 1-1. A shot by junior Jack West was saved by Gongora in the final minute of the half to send the match to overtime.

Freshman Andrew Zingone accounted for the only shot in the first overtime, but it sailed high and the score remained knotted. The Bears continued to control possession in the second half, and in the 104th minute West got into the box, but was knocked off the ball. Washington U. argued for a foul, but the refs indicated to play on. The Bears got the ball back into the box to West, who turned and fired a shot, but it rolled wide left. West got one more shot in the 108th minute, but it also went wide left. With just more than a minute to play, Dominican got its best scoring opportunity of the overtimes with a one-on-one, but Tannenbaum came out to stop the ball near the top of the box before the Stars were able to take a shot.

Tannenbaum finished with two saves, while playing the entire 110 minutes in goal for the Bears. Washington U. ended the match with an 18-14 advantage in shots. Both teams took three corner kicks.

Washington U. (1-1-1) returns to action by hosting Greenville College in the home opener Wednesday, Sept. 10. That match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at Francis Field.

Bear Notebook: The Bears and Dominican are tied 2-2-3 in the all-time series between the two teams … It was Tannenbaum's first start of his career.
