Box Score St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 27, 2014 – Sophomore goalkeeper Lizzy Crist made a career-high five saves and stopped two breakaways in the second half as the No. 1-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team posted a 0-0 double overtime tie with No. 10 Wheaton College (Ill.) Saturday afternoon at Francis Field in St. Louis.
Crist and the backline of senior Tessa Delaney, senior Tessa Klumpp, sophomore Hannah Rosenberg and sophomore Lexie Sprague allowed just five shots on goal in 110 minutes and posted their eighth shutout of the year. As a team, Washington U. has allowed just one goal in 835:42, limiting opponents to 23 shots on goal in nine games played.
Washington U. drops to 8-0-1 with the tie, while Wheaton is 8-1-1. The Bears fell from the ranks of undefeated Saturday, but are unbeaten in their last 24 games dating back to the 2013 season.
"I thought it was a great game. The girls came out and did everything we asked of them," said Washington U. head coach Jim Conlon. "Obviously, the ball didn't end up in the back of the net, but their effort and gameplay was fantastic today."
The Bears and the Thunder played an even first 15 minutes, but WUSTL had the best scoring opportunity in the 15th minute when junior Olivia Lillegraven fired a shot from 30 yards out that Wheaton goalkeeper Kelsey Graham got a finger on for the save.
Washington U. continued to put the pressure on Wheaton and nearly broke the scoreless tie after senior Lillie Toaspern's header was tipped by Graham and hit the crossbar and went out of bounds for a corner kick.
Wheaton's lone opportunity came in the 37th minute after Crist made a diving stop off Anna Seabolt's header off a set piece. It was the lone save of the half for Crist as Washington U. outshot Wheaton 11-8.
Crist continued to shine in goal for Washington U. as she stopped Seabolt on two breakaways in the 58th and 71st minute to keep the score tied. WUSTL had a 31-14 shot advantage and recorded five corner kicks.
Washington U. returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 1, with a road game at Fontbonne University. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Gay Field on the campus of Clayton High School.
Bear Notebook: Wheaton leads the all-time series with Washington U., 13-4-2 … The Thunder had won the last six meetings, and are 8-0-2 against Washington U. since 2007 … The Bears are 47-3-3 in the last three seasons.
