No. 9 Women's Tennis Falls to No. 8 Carnegie Mellon in UAA Championship Semifinal

Altamonte Springs, Fla., April 26, 2014 – The No. 9-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles, but No. 8 Carnegie Mellon University battled to a 6-3 win over the Bears in the semifinal of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship Saturday afternoon.

Carnegie Mellon won the first point of the match with a victory at No. 2 doubles, but Washington U. rallied with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead. The Tartans won in straight sets at third, fourth and fifth singles to make the score 4-2, but sophomore Jamie Silverberg made it 4-3 with her 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles. Carnegie Mellon sealed the win by rallying for victories at No. 6 and No. 2 singles.

Washington U. dropped to 16-5 on the season with the loss, while Carnegie Mellon improved to 17-3. The Bears face No. 12 University of Chicago in the third-place match at the UAA Championship at 9 a.m. (ET) Sunday. Washington U. earned an 8-1 win at Chicago April 13.

• It marked the third year in a row Washington U. and Carnegie Mellon have played at the UAA Championship. The Tartans also defeated the Bears 6-3 in last year's semifinal round.
• It was just the second loss this season for Washington U. when leading after doubles (15-2).
• The Bears are 8-4 against ranked opponents this season.
• Silverberg's win at No. 1 singles was her 70th career victory.
• Senior Betsy Edershile and junior Hanna Newstadt have won nine straight doubles matches.
