Box Score St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 8, 2014 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to the University of Chicago in the final regular-season contest for both teams Saturday afternoon at Francis Field.
Chicago improved to 11-5-2 with the win, and they captured the 2014 University Athletic Association (UAA) championship with a 5-0-2 record. Washington U. ends its season with an 8-7-2 record, 1-5-1 in the conference. Chicago also receives the UAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
Jorge Bilbao broke the scoreless tie in the 74th minute with a free kick that went off the Washington U. wall and into the back of the net. The goal for Bilbao was his third of the season and first in UAA play.
Washington U. put together its two best scoring chances 30 seconds apart in the first half. Sophomore Grant Baltes fired a shot from 25 yards out, but Chicago goalkeeper Hill Bonin made a diving save and deflected the shot over the crossbar for a corner kick. Junior Jack West sent in the Bears' only corner kick of the half that freshman Nick Knight headed just over the crossbar.
The Bears had a 5-2 shot advantage in the first half, but Chicago took six corner kicks.
Chicago, who was limited to one shot on goal in the opening half, had a golden opportunity in the 49th minute but sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Geanon came up with a big save.
West created a scoring chance for the Bears in the 59th minute, beating three defenders and firing a shot from 25 yards out, but Bonin made another diving save.
Geanon made four saves and took the loss in goal to fall to 5-6-1. Bonin picked up his seventh shutout of the season for the Maroons to improve to 9-2-2. Washington U. outshot Chicago 12-7 for the game.
Bear Notebook: Washington U. leads the all-time series against Chicago 25-9-2 … The Bears finished the season 5-4 at home … Washington U.'s senior class of Eric Bishop, Randy Gartside, Jonathan Lipsey and David Wang helped the Bears to a 43-20-8 (.662) overall record in their four seasons on the Danforth Campus.
