No. 1 Bears Begin UAA Play With 1-1 Tie with No. 5 Emory

St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 5, 2014 – The No. 1-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team opened University Athletic Association (UAA) play with a 1-1 double overtime tie to No. 5-ranked Emory University Sunday afternoon at Francis Field in St. Louis.

Washington U. falls to 9-0-2 with the tie, 0-0-1 in the UAA, while Emory is 6-0-3, 0-0-1 in the UAA. The Bears extended their unbeaten streak to 26 games dating back to the 2013 season.

Washington U. outshot Emory 21-17 and had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Bears dominated both overtimes, registering the only four shots of the extra time. WUSTL sophomore goalkeeper Lizzy Crist made a career-high eight saves, while Emory junior goalkeeper Liz Arnold also recorded eight saves.

"I loved our fight. I loved our battle. We had a couple girls not finish the game due to being banged up and our kids just stepped up all over the field," said Washington U. head coach Jim Conlon.

The two teams traded goals in the 14th minute, scoring 32 seconds apart. Washington U. struck first at 13:16 as sophomore Katie Chandler buried a pass from senior Lillie Toaspern to make it 1-0. The goal for Chandler was her sixth of the season, while Toaspern picked up her eighth assist.

Emory answered right back at 13:51 after Emily Feldman headed home a cross from Charlotte Butker to tie the score. The goal allowed by Washington U. was its second this season. The Eagles had another good scoring opportunity in the 25th minute after Karina Rodriguez was left open just outside the 18, but her shot went into the hands of Crist.

Emory had a 9-7 shot advantage in the first half, as Crist made three saves.

The Eagles had a pair of chances early in the second half, including a breakaway by Feldman at 57:18 that Crist made the save. Feldman had another opportunity less than a minute later that Crist was there for her fifth save of the game.

Washington U. had its first scoring chance of the second half in the 73rd minute after junior Abby Starker was taken down outside the box. Senior Tessa Klumpp took the free kick for WUSTL that went directly in the hands of Arnold. The Bears had another good opportunity in the 79th minute after Arnold stopped freshman Gillian Myers' shot from 20 yards out.

Toaspern had a breakaway in the 87th minute after receiving a quick pass from junior Olivia Lillegraven, but Arnold came out and made a tremendous save to knock it over the crossbar.

Washington U. plays its first conference road game at No. 4-ranked Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday, Oct. 11. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. (ET) in Pittsburgh.
