Men's Soccer Drops UAA Opener to No. 6 Emory 2-1 in OT

St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 5, 2014 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team suffered a 2-1-overtime loss to No. 6-ranked Emory University in the University Athletic Association (UAA) opener for both teams Sunday afternoon at Francis Field.

Emory remains unbeaten with an 11-0-1 mark, 1-0 in the UAA, while Washington U. falls to 5-3-1, 0-1 in the UAA. The Eagles have won 11 straight matches after a season-opening tie.

Matt Sherr scored the game-winning goal for the Eagles in the 93rd minute after cleaning up a long throw in the box by Jeffrey Cochran. The goal for Sherr was his second of the season.

Washington U. sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Geanon made three saves in the loss for WUSTL. Emory outshot Washington U. 10-8, and the Bears had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Emory and Washington U. each had five shots in the opening 45 minutes of play, with each team having one scoring opportunity. Geanon came up with a big save in the sixth minute after he corralled a header from Sebastian Hardington in the box. Washington U. had its lone scoring chance in the 25th minute, but sophomore Nick Politan did not get much on his shot after being left open in the box on a corner kick.

Junior Jack West was taken down in the box in the 57th minute and then converted the penalty kick to give Washington U. the 1-0 lead. The goal for West was his team-leading fourth of the season. Emory began to press after the Bears' goal in the second half, and the Eagles got the equalizer in the 63rd minute after Carl Credle headed home a long cross from Cochran. The Eagles had another golden opportunity in the 78th minute, but Geanon came up big again after deflecting a header from Hardington out of the box.

Washington U. begins a four-match roadtrip by taking on Fontbonne University at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Centene Stadium in Clayton, Mo. 

Bear Notebook: Washington U. leads the all-time series between the two teams 12-8-9 … 22 of the 29 matches have been decided by one goal or less … The Bears are 3-2 this season at home.
