Box Score St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 31, 2014 – The No. 5-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team outshot Brandeis University 24-7 but could not find the back of the net in a 1-0 loss to the Judges Friday night at Francis Field in St. Louis.
Washington U. falls to 12-2-2, 2-2-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Brandeis improved to 12-3-1, 2-2-1 in the conference. The Bears sit in a tie for third place in the UAA standings with Brandeis and New York University, five points behind first place Carnegie Mellon University.
Washington U. hosts New York Sunday, Nov. 2, at 1:30 p.m. on Senior Day. Prior to the contest, WUSTL will honor its four seniors - Kaylin Balley, Tessa Delaney, senior Tessa Klumpp and Lillie Toaspern.
Washington U. recorded the first nine shots of the game, and nearly scored the first goal in the 16th minute. Junior Anna Sippel made a nice move to get around a defender in the corner and sent a cross in that junior Liz Collins got a foot on but knocked out by a Brandeis defender.
With the Bears holding a 9-0 advantage in shots, it was Brandeis who found the back of the net on its first shot of the game. Samantha Schwartz finished a pass from Sapir Edalati and beat WUSTL sophomore goalkeeper Lizzy Crist with a shot to the far left corner to make it 1-0.
Washington U. outshot Brandeis 13-1 in the first half and had a 3-1 corner kick advantage. Brandeis goalkeeper Michelle Savuto faced 12 shots and made four saves in the first half.
Klumpp, who scored the game-winner against No. 25-ranked Illinois Wesleyan Monday, nearly tied the game in the 50th minute when her shot from 35 yards out went off the crossbar. That was the best chance for WUSTL to score in the second half. Crist made three saves and fell to 10-2-2 with the loss
Bear Notebook: Washington U. suffered its first home conference loss since 2010 … Washington U. is No. 2 in the NCAA Central Region Rankings, while Brandeis is No. 3 in the New England Region … The Bears are 51-5-4 in the last three seasons … Washington U. also suffered home loss of the season (4-1-2).
