Box Score

St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 31, 2014 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team suffered a heart-breaking 2-1-overtime loss to No. 3-ranked Brandeis University Friday night at Francis Field in St. Louis.

Brandeis picked up its fifth-straight win to improve to 16-1, and remained in first place in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings with a 4-1 mark. Washington U. dropped to 7-6-1 with the loss, including a 0-4-1 mark in the UAA. The overtime loss for Washington U. was its third in UAA play.

Robbie Lynch scored the game-winner in the 96th minute after heading home a cross from Josh Ocel in the first overtime. The goal for Lynch was his second of the season.

Washington U. had a 5-4 shot advantage and controlled play most of the first half. The Bears first scoring chance in the first half came in the 12th minute after junior Jack West was taken down outside the 18. The free kick from West was just left of Brandeis goalkeeper Joe Graffy.

Brandeis came with more energy in the second half and had its first scoring chance in the 49th minute after Brandon Miskin fired a shot from 25 yards out at freshman goalkeeper Daniel Geanon stopped.

West was taken down in the 60th minute inside the box, and then converted his fourth penalty kick of the season to make it 1-0. The goal for West was his team-leading eighth of the season.

After West's goal, Brandeis picked up its play and nearly tied the game in the 69th minute after Mike Lynch's header went over the head of Geanon and off the crossbar and out of bounds. Geanon continued to stand tall in the net and made a diving stop on a heal flick form Tyler Savonen in the 75th minute to keep it a one-goal game. He made another save in the 81st minute after Zach Vieria was left open in the box but did not get much on a shot.

With less than a minute to play, Brandeis' Evan Jastremski sent a cross into the box that deflected off a Washington U. defender and into the net to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Brandeis outshot Washington U. 17-9 and had each team had three corner kicks. Geanon (4-5-1) made five saves in the loss.

Washington U. hosts New York University at 11 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 2, on Senior Day at Francis Field. The Bears will recognize their four seniors – Eric Bishop, Randy Gartside, Jonathan Lipsey and David Wang.
