Box Score Cleveland, Ohio, Oct. 17, 2014 – The No. 2-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in a 2-1 double overtime defeat at Case Western Reserve University Friday night in Cleveland.
Case Western Reserve improves its overall record to 8-3-2, 1-2 in the UAA, while Washington U. drops to 10-1-2, 1-1-1 in the UAA. The loss snapped the Bears' 21-game road winning streak, tops in all NCAA Divisions, and broke a 27-game unbeaten streak dating back to the 2013 season.
Case senior forward Jessie Sabers celebrated senior night by scoring her second goal of the match in double OT on a header at 101:41 on an assist by freshman midfielder Madeleine Harris. The game-winner for Sabers' was her school-record 11th all-time.
After a scoreless first half, the Spartans struck first in the 54th minute after Sabers grabbed possession after a turnover and was fouled on a breakway in the box. On the ensuing penalty kick, Sabers beat Washington U. sophomore goalkeeper Lizzy Crist to the bottom right corner for her fourth goal of the season.
The Bears then turned the heat on offensively and finally broke through at 85:06 when senior forward Lillie Toaspern battled her way into the box and fired a shot off of the left post and into the net.
Washington U. outshot Case, 14-7, and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Crist (8-1-2) suffered her first loss of the season making five saves and allowing both goals. The Bears entered the contest allowing just two goals in 1125:42.
Washington U. continues conference play at the University of Rochester on Sunday, Oct. 19. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. in Rochester, N.Y.
