WashU Men's Soccer Falls To Rochester At Home, 2-1

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team dropped a UAA heartbreaker on Friday evening as Rochester scored two second-half goals to come from behind for a 2-1 win over the Bears on Francis Olympic Field.

WashU moves to 9-3-2 overall and 2-2-0 in the UAA.

The Bears controlled the ball early as it stayed mostly in the Bears' attacking quarter of the pitch. Sophomore Casper Leary took the first shot as Rochester's Aidan Hartman was forced to make a diving stop at 7:16.

It didn't take long after that for WashU to get on the board. With the ball being played in the front half of the penalty area, Leary found sophomore Sebastian Valdes on the right side, who immediately passed it back inside the goal box to senior Ethan Wirtschafter, who fired a goal to give the Bears a 1-0 lead at 10:20.

WashU continued to put pressure on the Yellowjackets the rest of the first half as they took five more shots while allowing just one for Rochester.

The visitors would not waste time in the second half, leveling the game with a goal just 2:41 into the second period. On a play that was similar to WashU's first-half goal, the Yellowjackets scored when Milos Bisenic took a pass from Basobas O'Carroll for a goal at 47:41.

Rochester would flip the script in ball possession for the first 20 minutes of the second half. However, it was not until late in the 80th minute that the Yellowjackets were fouled a yard into the penalty box, allowing them to take a penalty kick. Bisenic would double up the Bears with a PK goal at 79:48, giving Rochester the 2-1 lead.

The Yellowjackets would take two more shots the rest of the way while holding the Bears without one as Rochester escaped with the 2-1 win.

Leary finished with three shots, including one on goal, while both Wirtschafter and first-year Nick Lam finished with two shots each. Senior Cal L'Hommedieu played all 90 minutes in goal, making four saves.

WashU is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 25, when they host No. 17 Emory in a Sunday matinee at 11 a.m. on Francis Olympic Field.
