ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team returned home after a three-game road trip on Saturday afternoon when it faced No. 7 Case Western Reserve in a UAA matchup. The Spartans used an early goal and would eventually hold on for a 2-0 win over the Bears on Francis Olympic Field.
CWRU made quick work of getting on the board, with Cameron Thayer taking a shot 3:50 into the contest. The ball bounced off the crossbar, where it found the head of Siaheed Jah, who knocked it in for the goal at 3:53.
The teams would play even the rest of the half. The Bears finished the first 45 minutes with a pair of shots while the Spartans tallied three. Corner kicks were strongly in WashU's favor as the Bears took six while CWRU was held to just one.
Coming out of the break, the Spartans added an insurance goal less than five minutes into the half. CWRU lofted a corner kick into the goal box, where senior
Cal L'Hommedieu punched the ball out of the immediate area. The ball did not go far as it found the foot of Owen Guffey, who fired a goal to the highest part of the back of the net, adding an insurance goal and putting the Spartans ahead 2-0 at 49:52.
The Bears went on to control the ball for most of the second half, taking six shots after the CWRU second goal while the Spartans had only one.
L'Hommedieu made one save while playing all 90 minutes in goal. Senior
Ethan Wirtschafter took four of the nine shots taken by WashU.
As a team, the Bears led in total shots (9-5) and corner kicks (12-3).
WashU is back on the road next Saturday, Oct. 17, when it travels to Carnegie Mellon. The UAA contest with the Tartans is scheduled for an 11 a.m. ET start in Pittsburgh.
