NEWARK, N.J. – The (RV) Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team hit the road for the final two games of the regular season on Saturday when it paid a visit to NYU. The Violets hosted the Bears at NJIT's Lubetkin Field in Newark.
Scoring twice in the first half, WashU picked up the 2-1 win over NYU to improve to 10-3-3 on the season and 3-2-1 in the UAA.
The Bears got on the board first in the 10th minute as NYU misplayed a pass around center midfield that found the foot of sophomore
Casper Leary, who played it forward to senior
Quentin Gomez, who tapped it back to Leary on the left side. Leary then fired a goal to the lower right side to give WashU a 1-0 lead at 9:30.
WashU added its second goal late in the first half, with less than five minutes before halftime. After the Bears drove up the field, NYU failed to clear near its end line, where WashU sophomore
Nick Hammond intercepted the ball and passed it to senior
Ethan Wirtschafter, who fired a shot that was saved.
The ball, however, was not controlled by Violet goalkeeper Jackson McCloskey. It immediately found the foot of sophomore
Wole Adeoye, who scored his second goal in the last three games to the lower left corner as the Bears went up 2-0 at 41:00.
Most of the second half saw a defensive stalemate as neither team was able to score until the Violets got a late goal in the 79th minute. NYU stole the ball off a WashU throw-in before Kaan Akturan was able to float the ball over the head of senior goalkeeper
Cal L'Hommedieu and into the net, pulling the Violets within one at 2-1.
Despite a number of attempts in the final 10 minutes by the Violets, none of their shots made it past L'Hommedieu as WashU secured the road win, 2-1.
First-year
Nick Lam, sophomore
Miles Newman, and Wirtschafter each had two of the Bears' nine total shots.
L'Hommedieu played all 90 minutes, making five saves.
WashU wraps up the road trip and the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 7, when it visits Chicago. Kickoff with the Maroons is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Stagg Grass Fields.
