PITTSBURGH, Pa. – In its lone contest of the week, the Washington University in St. Louis traveled to the Steel City to take on (RV) Carnegie Mellon. After a scoreless first half, WashU used an early second-half goal to secure the win over the Tartans, 1-0, at the CMU Soccer Field.
With the win, the Bears improve to 9-2-3 overall and 2-1-0 in the UAA.
It did not take long for the first shot, as CMU fired a shot to the bottom right of the goal that was saved by senior goalkeeper
Cal L'Hommedieu at 1:39. Just 30 seconds later, L'Hommedieu made another save on a Tartan shot on goal.
Neither team could find a strong rhythm in the first 45 minutes, with CMU holding the edge in shots, 5-2, while the Bears saw L'Hommedieu make three saves. WashU also had the lead in corner kicks, 2-1.
After a corner kick in the 54th minute, WashU was able to send the ball into the box. The ball bounced around among the Bears before first-year
Nick Lam tapped it to a sliding senior
Colin Link, who sent the ball to the back of the net. The goal gave the Bears a 1-0 lead at 54:12.
WashU would send more shots into the box in the second half, but both teams' defenses held the rest of the way, with the Tartans taking the final shot early in the 87th minute as the Bears held on for the 1-0 win.
Link and Lam led WashU in shots with two apiece, while sophomore
Sebastian Valdes and classmate
Jack Hayeems each tallied one. L'Hommedieu played all 90 minutes in goal for his ninth win and fourth shutout of the season, making four saves.
WashU is back home next weekend for a pair of UAA contests, beginning with Rochester on Friday, Oct. 23, at Francis Olympic Field. Kickoff with the Yellowjackets is scheduled for 5 p.m. The game is also serving as the team's Hispanic Heritage Month & Youth and Campers contest.
