TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Nearly 300 runners and 32 teams competed at the 2024 NCAA Div. III Cross Country National Championships on Saturday with the No. 16 Washington University in St. Louis men's cross country team finishing one spot ahead of their ranking in 15th place with 422 team points.
The top three in the national rankings finished according to the rankings. Wisconsin-La Crosse took home the team title with just 77 points and two top five finishers. Wartburg was national runner-up with 173 points and one, top 10 finisher. Third ranked Pomona Pitzer finished the championship with 182 points and two top 10 finishers.
Wisconsin-Whitewater and NYU rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth place, respectively, and were separated by just one point, 219-220.
SUNY-Geneseo (226 points), North Central (257 points), St. Olaf (265 points), RPI (266 points), and Williams (278 points) finished in sixth through 10th place.
Senior Cullen Capuano was the first Bear to cross the finish line in 33rd place, securing just 28 points for WashU with a time of 24.52.9. With his top 40 place finish, Capuano earned his second All-American honors of his career, after finishing 38th a year ago.
Classmate Matthew Hornung was next for the Bears in 50th place, scoring 39 points with a time of 24:52.9. Junior Conor Daly was third for WashU in 119th place and 96 points with a time of 25:18.5.
Seniors Jack Maranz and Alexander Gadin were the fourth and fifth point scorers for the Bears. Maranz finished in 175th place wit a time of 25:37.7, recording 128 points and Gadin crossed in 178th place with a time of 15:38.6, scoring 131 points.
Sophomore Will Liu (189th, 25:43.5) and junior Alexander Bullard (207th, 25:50.2) also ran for the Bears.
