ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – In a chilly midday race, the No. 21 Washington University men's cross country team took on 30 other teams at the 2024 NCAA Midwest Regional on Saturday at the Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill. and came away with a podium finish in third.
The 8k course was hosted by Augustana.
No. 2 Wartburg claimed the team title with 44 points. No. 4 North Central was just four points behind them with 48 points in second place. The Bears finished the meet with 94 points in third. No. 26 Loras (151 points) and No. 28 Augustana (158 points) rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Graduate Cullen Capuano was the first Bear to cross the finish line in seventh place with a time of 24:43.0. Senior Matthew Hornung was just .1 seconds behind Capuano in eighth place with a time of 24:43.1.
Junior Conor Daly finished the meet in 22nd place with a time of 25:07.3. The final two point scorers for WashU were graduate Jack Maranz in 27th place with a time of 25:16.0 and junior Alexander Bullard in 30th place with a time of 25:17.4.
WashU will next compete in one week on Saturday, Nov. 23 at the NCAA National Championships. This year's race will be taking place at the Lavern Gibson XC Course in Terre Haute, Ind. The Bears have already competed twice on the course at the John McNichols Invite and the Nike XC Meet Twilight.
