No. 16 Men's Soccer Blanks Greenville at Home

St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 26, 2017 – The No. 16-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team erupted for four second-half goals en route to a 5-0 win over Greenville University Tuesday at Francis Field in St. Louis.

WashU won its sixth-straight game to improve to 6-0-1, while Greenville dropped to 4-5. The Bears are one of 21 teams in NCAA Division III who remain unbeaten.

It took WashU just 5:03 to take the 1-0 lead after sophomore Makio Yamamoto scored from just outside the six on a double assist from juniors Ryan Sproule and Ben Strozewski.

The Bears outshot Greenville 20-5 in the first half. Greenville goalkeeper Nick Holland made 10 saves to keep it a one-goal game.

Senior Shadi Awad headed home a free kick from Yamamoto in the 47th minute to push the advantage to 2-0. The goal for Awad was his first of the season.

Freshman Cole Schmitz and juniors Ben Strozewski and Camillo Haller added goals for WashU to round out the scoring.

WashU outshot Greenville 38-6 and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Colin McCune (four saves, 72:00), freshman Bryant Hales (15:00) and junior Thomas Orgielewicz combined to secure the Bears' fifth-shutout of the season.

WashU opens conference play at Emory University (6-2) on Saturday, Sept. 30. Game time is set for 11 a.m. in Atlanta. The Bears will also take on Oglethorpe University (4-2-1) on Monday at Noon (ET) in Atlanta.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series against Greenville 23-3-1, and the Bears have won 10-straight meetings … The five goals scored were a season high … The Bears are unbeaten in their last nine games dating back to last season … WashU has yet to allow a goal in the second half … The goal for Schmitz was the first of his career.
