COLUMBIA, Mo. – The No. 22 Washington University in St. Louis men's cross country team took on the toughest competition it might see all year at the Gans Creek Classic Men's 8K Black on Friday, with several Div. I programs competing.
UCLA took the team title with just 86 points. Ohio State (112 points), Illinois-Chicago (122 points), Iowa Western CC (137 points), and Kansas (178 points) completed the top five team finishers.
The Bears finished in 20th place as a team with 450 points and were the top Div. III program in the race. WashU finished ahead of Div. I SLU, Central Arkansas, Northern Iowa, UT-San Antonio, Baylor, and UMKC.
In total, 260 competitors took to the starting line with 253 completing the race.
First-year
Charlie Houck was the first WashU runner to cross the finish line. He finished in 101st place with a time of 24:48.8 and secured 70 points for the Bears. Classmate
Max Sudrzynski was 121st, scoring 85 points with a time of 24:57.3.
Senior
Conor Daly was the next Bear to cross, with a time of 25:00.7, finishing in 129th place and grabbing 92 points. Sophomore
Sean Green (101 points – 25:04.4) and first-year
Gavin O'Connor (102 points - 25:04.9) went back-to-back in 141st and 142nd place, respectively.
WashU will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 18, when it travels to Rock Island, Ill. for the Augie Interregional. The men's 8K begins at 11 a.m.
