Bear Beats: Episode 2, For Competition Through Aug. 31

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Bear Beats is a weekly release that will be posted on Mondays to provide a look back at the past week of action and to preview the events for the upcoming week. The second episode for the 2025-26 year will feature men's and women's soccer, volleyball, football, and men's and women's cross country.

On the horizon:
 
No. 1 Women's Soccer
  • WashU will face a tough week with three matches in six days.
  • The Bears hit the road for the first time in 2025 with a trip to Illinois Wesleyan on Tuesday, Sept. 2.
  • Game time with the Titans is scheduled for 5 p.m.

  • The Bears and Titans have faced off 18 times since 2007 with WashU leading the series 14-2-2.
  • Last season WashU shutout IWU at home, 4-0.
  • The Bears then return home to Francis Olympic Field for the weekend, beginning with a contest against #25 Calvin on Friday, Sept. 5 at 5 p.m.

  • Last season, the Bears and Knights played to a 0-0 draw, one of the two draws on the season for WashU.
  • Overall WashU has a 9-0-1 series record against Calvin.
  • With a day break, the Bears will then host Rose-Hulman on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. as part of Senior Day/Cancer Awareness Day.
  • The Bears will honor their five seniors with a special recognition prior to the start of the contest.

  • The Fightin' Engineers and Bears have played six times with WashU having a 5-0-1 record, including a 5-0 win last season in Terre Haute.

No. 10 Volleyball
  • The Bears are on the road this week at the Marty Petersen Invitational at Wis.-Oshkosh on Friday, Sept. 5 and Saturday, Sept. 6.
  • The Bears will face the host Titans on Friday at 2 p.m. to open the tournament.
  • This will be the first meeting since 2023 with the Bears holding the series record at 4-1.
  • On Saturday, WashU will first face off against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 12:30 p.m.
  • It marks the ninth meeting in the all-time series with the record even at 4-4.
  • The Athenas won the last meeting on Sept. 8, 2023 in a five-set thriller in Claremont.
  • The weekend wraps up with a match against Wis.-Stevens Point at 3 p.m.
  • The only previous matchup between the Pointers and Bears was last season with WashU coming away with a 3-1 at home.

Men's Soccer
  • It will be a week of program firsts for WashU.
  • The Bears host their home opener on Friday, Sept. 5 when they welcome Elmhurst to Francis Olympic Field for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
  • The game is the team's International Student Appreciation game.
  • This is the first game against the Bluejays in program history.

  • The Bears then return to the road on Sunday, Sept. 7 when they travel to Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill.
  • Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
  • This game is also a first as the two teams have never met on the pitch.

RV Men's & No. 7 Women's Cross Country
  • The Bears will host the Gabby Reuveni Invite on Saturday, Sept. 6.
  • The meet will take place on the SIUE XC Course in Edwardsville, Ill.
  • Both men's and women's races will be competing in a 5k course.
  • WashU welcomes in Greenville, Jefferson College, Maryville (Mo.), McKendree, Principia, and Westminster (Mo.)
  • WashU alumni will also be participating in the races.
  • The men's race starts at 8 a.m.
  • The women's race starts at 8:30 a.m.

RV Football
  • The Bears kick off the 2025 season at home when Rhodes pays a visit to Francis Olympic Field on Saturday, Sept. 6.
  • Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
  • It marks the first home night game for WashU since the Bears faced Wheaton on Oct. 2, 2021.
  • Prior to the game, the Bears will host a First-Year Student Tailgate at 5:30 p.m.
  • The tailgate is in partnership with WashU Student Transitions and ResLife.
  • WashU and Rhodes have met 54 times on the gridiron with the Bears holding a slight edge in the record at 27-26-1.
  • Last season the Bears scored 34 second-half points enroute to a 44-20 win over the Lynx in Memphis.
