FULTON, Mo. – Hitting the road for the first time this season, the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer dropped a 2-1 contest to Westminster in Fulton on Sunday evening to close out opening weekend action.
The teams went back and forth early in the first half with the Blue Jays taking the first shot that ricocheted off the crossbar in the seventh minute.
Senior
Zach Susee was able to collect the Bears' first shot in the 13th minute, but a diving save allowed Westminster to keep the game scoreless.
The Blue Jays were able to break through the tie in the 27th minute off a quick breakaway goal. They followed up just three minutes later to score an insurance goal, taking a 2-0 lead.
Shortly before the half, the Bears fired the ball upfield but it was last touched by Westminster. Susee took the resulting corner kick and got the ball into the box where it found junior
Quentin Gomez, who knocked the ball into the back of the net to cut the lead down to 2-1 going into halftime.
Despite controlling the ball for the majority of the final 45 minutes, WashU was unable to level the contest as the Blue Jays escaped with the 2-1 win.
The Bears fired 20 shots, including 14 on goal, while the defense held Westminster to just four total shots, all in the first half.
WashU returns home on Friday, Sept. 5 when it hosts Elmhurst in its home opener at Francis Olympic Field. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
