SEASON PREVIEW: #5 Men's Basketball

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team opens the 2025-26 season at home on Friday night against Carroll at 6 p.m.
 
The Bears – who reached the Final Four last season – checked in at No. 5 in the D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25. Last week, sophomore Connor May, who was the 2024-25 UAA Rookie of the Year, was named to the D3hoops.com 2025-26 Preseason All-America Fourth Team.

All the Bears home games as well as all road UAA games will be streamed exclusively through FloSports. This year, the UAA and FloSports entered an exclusive, five-year media rights agreement to stream all UAA competition.
 
FloSports is a subscription-based platform available on desktop, laptop or tablet. The FloSports app is available for iPhone and Android and is available through Roku and Amazon Fire TV.

Schedule
Seven of the Bears' eight games during the first semester are at home, starting with the Pioneers on Friday evening. Next weekend, WashU hosts the 41st Annual Lopata Classic and plays Eureka on Friday, Nov. 14 at 5 p.m. The following day, the Bears will take on either UW-Whitewater or (RV) St. Thomas (TX) in the championship or consolation game.
 
The Bears host Wabash on Monday, Nov. 24 at 5 p.m. before hosting the All-Academic Classic the weekend after Thanksgiving. On Saturday, Nov. 29, WashU faces off with Colorado College at 3 p.m. and follows with a game on Sunday at 3 p.m. against Rhodes.
 
On Saturday, Dec. 6, the Bears host Webster at 3 p.m. and head to Rose-Hulman on Tuesday, Dec. 9 for a 6:30 p.m. ET tip. WashU closes out the 2025 portion of the schedule on Thursday, Dec. 18 against Illinois Wesleyan at 2 p.m.
 
The Bears begin 2026 at the Glenn Van Wieren Classic at Hope College. They face the host team on Friday, Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. ET and take on the University of Olivet the next day at 12 p.m. ET.
 
WashU hits the road for the first three games of the UAA schedule, beginning with Chicago, who checked in at No. 11 in the D3hoops.com poll, on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 1 p.m. The following weekend, the Bears head to Pittsburgh and Cleveland for the first double weekend, beginning with a 5:30 p.m. ET game at Carnegie Mellon on Friday, Jan. 16. On Sunday, Jan. 18, WashU takes on Case Western Reserve (CWRU) at 2 p.m. ET.
 
The Bears host NYU in the UAA home opener on Friday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m. On Sunday, Jan. 25, WashU hosts Brandeis in a 2 p.m. match up. The Bears are home again the following weekend, starting with a 5:30 p.m. game against Emory, which is No. 3 in the D3hoops.com poll, on Friday, Jan. 30, followed by a 2 p.m. game on Sunday, Feb. 1 against Rochester.
 
WashU heads to Atlanta and Rochester the following weekend to face the Eagles and Yellowjackets again. On Friday, Feb. 6, the Bears take on Emory at 5:30 p.m. ET and round out the trip on Sunday, Feb. 8 at Rochester at 2 p.m. ET.
 
On Friday, Feb. 13, the Bears host Carnegie Mellon at 5:30 p.m. and take on CWRU on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. In the final road trip of the regular season, WashU heads east for a game at NYU on Friday, Feb. 20 at 5:30 p.m. ET and wrap up at Brandeis on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. ET.
 
The Bears conclude the regular season at home with Chicago on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m., which will be senior day.
 
Personnel
Although the Bears graduated some key players, several impact players are returning from last year's Final Four squad, in addition to a talented group of newcomers.

May finished third in scoring last year for the Bears with 11.9 points per game and is the highest-scoring returner this season. He also wrapped up the season with 5.8 rebounds per game, 31 steals, and 20 blocks after earning UAA Rookie of the Year honors as well as a UAA Honorable Mention.

Senior Will Grudzinski played and started in all but one game for the Bears a season ago, averaging 7.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. He finished the year with 52 assists and 12 steals. Junior Ryan Cohen played in all 30 games, making 20 starts and averaging 5.8 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. He had 22 assists on the year and 12 steals.

Senior Calvin Kapral played in all 30 games with 28 starts at center, averaging 5.1 points per game. Adding depth to the forward position is junior Jake Davis, who played in 22 games with one start, averaging 3.5 points per game.

Although he only played in 17 games last season due to an injury, senior Yogi Oliff returns as one of the Bears' top ball handlers and defensive players. He averaged 6.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, dishing out 46 assists and recording 19 steals.

Graduate senior Kyle Beedon is back on the floor for the Bears after missing all of last season due to injury. In his junior year during 2023-24, he played in all 28 games with 13 starts, averaging 10.8 points and 2.3 rebounds per game, along with 29 assists, 16 steals, and 10 blocks, and finished 69-for-175 (.394) from 3-point range.

Junior George Gale averaged 15.2 minutes off the bench last season, averaging 5.0 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Junior Emmett Lawton played in 28 games as a reserve, averaging 9.8 minutes per game. Sophomore Lleyton Thomas-Johnson worked his way into more minutes as a first-year player last season, averaging 6.3 minutes per game. Junior Lucas Vogel, who was the first player in program history to win the Elite 90 Award a season ago, will add depth and experience to the guard position.

Also adding depth to the guard position are senior Jonathan Coffy, sophomore Yusuf Cisse, and first-years Josh Kim, Colby Smith, and Theo Rocca. Sophomore Anthony Przybilla and first-year Jack Cubbage will provide support in the paint for the Bears.
