Men's Basketball Suffers Heartbreaker in National Semifinal, Falls to NYU

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 17 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker in the National Semifinal to No. 1 NYU, 72-60. The Bears close out the season with a 23-7 record after having their most successful season since 2009.

MBB with Fans - Final Four 2025Senior Hayden Doyle put up 17 points to lead the Bears. Senior Drake Kindsvater posted a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. First-year Connor May scored 10 points and pulled down six rebounds, and junior Yogi Oliff netted 10 rebounds.

After a WashU turnover at the start of the game, NYU put up the first three points, but the Bears scored six straight behind a jumper from Doyle and back-to-back layups from Kindsvater for a 6-3 lead at 17:57.

The Violets put in two buckets to take a 7-6 edge, but a 3-pointer from junior Will Grudzinski pushed the Bears ahead again, 9-7, at 15:55. NYU's Brock Susko hit a step-back jumper to tie the game at 9-9 with 15:34 on the clock.

With 12:00 remaining, the Bears took a 15-11 lead following an offensive putback from sophomore Jake Davis and a steal and layup from Oliff.

From there, NYU went on a 15-0 run over a three-and-a-half minute span, making it a 26-15 game at 8:28. A layup from Grudzinski ended the Violets' run.

NYU maintained a double-digit lead until the final 4:16 of the first half. Down 10, Oliff hit a 3-pointer and put in a layup to make it a five-point, 32-27 game at 3:23.

The Violets brought it back up to nine points, but a 3-pointer from Doyle at 1:53 closed the gap to six points. NYU answered with a shot from distance, and the Bears closed out the half with a free throw from Kindsvater and a jumper from Grudzinski for a 39-33 deficit.

NYU hit a shot from behind the arc to start the second half, and, after a pair of free throws from sophomore Ryan Cohen, hit another 3-pointer for a 45-35 lead. Doyle responded with a 3-pointer at 18:29.

The teams continued to exchange baskets with the Bears' points coming from Kindsvater and May. A 3-pointer from May at 15:23 made it a six-point, 49-43 game. Following a Violets' jumper, May put in a driving layup to keep the deficit to six.

NYU's Tristan How put in a pair of free throws and Jack Stone netted a 3-pointer for a 56-45 game. Hampton Sanders hit a 3-pointer, his sixth of the day, to make it a 59-45 game midway through the second half.

Down 13, a 3-pointer from May followed by a layup from Doyle made it an eight-point, 60-52 game. NYU responded with a 7-0 run to put the Violets up 15, 67-52, at 3:42.

Cohen netted the backend of a pair of free throws, and Doyle hit a 3-pointer to close it to an 11-point deficit, 67-56, at 3:31.

As the clock ticked down, the Bears would not come any closer than 11 points.

The senior class of Doyle, Kindsvater and Kyle Beedon have compiled an overall record of 82-30 with four trips to the NCAA Tournament including two appearances in the Sweet 16, one in the Elite 8 and one in the Final Four.
