PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis women's track and field team began the two-day University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Championships, Saturday, April 27. The Bears won three events and set two UAA records and three stadium records in the process.
With seven champions crowned on day one, WashU sits in first place, with 86 points.
Saturday's Top Finishers:
Pole Vault (Final):
- UAA CHAMPION!!
- Yasmin Ruff welcomed the UAA title in the pole vault with her vault of 3.79m
- In the process, Ruff set a new stadium record as she broke the previous record of 3.78m
- Ruff tallied 10 team points for the Bears
- Makenzie Stock placed runner-up with her clearance of the 3.46m bar
- Stock notched eight team points for the Bears
- Mackenzie Walker earned fourth with her mark of 3.31m
- Walker secured five team points for the Bears
4 x 800 Relay (Final):
- UAA CHAMPION!!
- The team of Danielle Schultz, Caroline Echols, Izzy Gorton, and Ally Sarussi won the 4 x 800 relay in convincing fashion
- The team, who won by nearly six seconds, set a new stadium and UAA record
- The team won with a time of 8:59.98
- The league champions topped the previous stadium (9:09.93) and UAA (9:00.06) marks
- With the win, the team hauled in 10 team points
3,000 Steeplechase (Final):
Hammer Throw (Final):
- Taylor Simpson posted a mark of 43.16m in the hammer throw to secure a seventh-place finish
- Simpson grabbed two team points for the Bears
- Kally Mack took ninth with her heave of 40.25m
Long Jump (Final):
- In the long jump, Ebun Opata placed fourth with her leap of 5.43m
- Opata secured five team points for the Bears
- Maya Davis hauled in sixth as she recorded a jump of 5.29m
- Davis notched three team points for the Bears
- Maddie Moenickheim (5.03m) placed 10th
Shot Put (Final):
- Jenae Bothe turned in a throw of 14.28m to take second in the shot put
- Bothe grabbed eight team points for the Bears
- Taylor Simpson posted a heave of 12.43m as she earned fifth
- Simpson notched four team points for the Bears
- Mikayla Wise (12.10m) registered seventh with her mark of 12.10m
- Wise earned two team points for the Bears
10,000 Meters (Final):
- In the 10,000m, Jillian Heth notched a fourth-place finish with her mark of 38:17.65
- Heth grabbed five team points for the Bears
- Avery McCammon mustered eighth in the event as she posted a time of 39:21.11
- McCammon picked up one point for the Bears
100 Meter Hurdles (Prelim):
- Lauren Gay earned the third-fastest time in the 100-meter hurdles prelim with a mark of 14.44
- Gay will compete in tomorrow's final
400 Meters (Prelim):
- Emma Kelley set a new stadium record along with a new UAA record in her preliminary round race
- Kelley posted a time of 54.75 which shattered the old stadium (54.91) and UAA (55.71) marks
- Cate Christopher secured a mark of 57.67, which was good for third
- Kylie Spytek (57.74) placed fourth in the preliminary round
- Kelley, Christopher, and Spytek will compete in tomorrow's final
100 Meters (Prelim):
- Jasmine Wright notched a time of 11.79 to finish second
- Maya Davis finished right behind Wright with her mark of 11.87
- Nicole Stewart placed fifth as she crossed the finish line with a time of 11.92
- Wright, Davis, and Stewart will all complete in tomorrow's final
800 Meters (Prelim):
- Tomorrow's final will feature four Bears
- Emma Kelley won the preliminary round as she crossed the finish line with a time of 2:11.26
- Danielle Schultz placed second with a mark of 2:11.65
- Caroline Echols (2:14.18) took third, while Izzy Gorton (2:14.54) secured sixth
- Kelley, Schultz, Echols, and Gorton will all compete in tomorrow's final
400 Meter Hurdles (Prelim):
- Ruby Kaplan notched a mark of 1:04.82 to haul in fifth
- Kaplan will compete in tomorrow's final
200 Meters (Prelim):
- Half of tomorrow's final will feature Bears
- Nicole Stewart welcomed a time of 24.45 to top the league in the preliminary round
- Lauren Gay garnered a time of 24.70 to place third
- Jasmine Wright turned in a mark of 24.84 to secure fourth
- Maya Davis (26.14) just snuck into the final with her eighth-place finish
- Stewart, Gay, Wright, and Davis will all compete in tomorrow's final
