St. Louis, Mo. – For the second straight match, the No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team was edged 5-4, falling to NCAA DII Northwest Missouri State in another highly competitive match at Tao Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
WashU moves to 9-6 on the season and NWMSU sits at 9-4 through Sunday's competition.
The Bears got off to a slow start and had to play from behind in singles action after dropping all three doubles matches by scores of 8-5.
In singles play, Abhi Ramireddy put the Bears on the board first, earning a clean 6-3, 6-3 straight-set victory at No. 1 singles.
Trailing 4-1, the Bears had to win the remaining singles matches to secure the victory, as Daniel Li sparked the Bears' rally back into the match.
Li won his second straight three-set match of the weekend, prevailing 6-2, 0-6, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to reduce the score down to 4-2.
Jared Phillips closed out a 6-4, 7-5 decision at No. 5 singles, and Luke Smith rallied from a set down to win in three (3-6, 6-4, 6-0) at No. 3 singles to tie up the match.
With the match dead even at 4-4, NWMSU would pull out the victory, winning the deciding match 6-4, 7-5 in a back-and-forth battle at No. 4 singles against WashU's Gaurav Singh.
The Bears will have a short turnaround as they will play host to Principia at Tao Tennis Center tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
