Men's Tennis

Late Night Ends With No. 15 WashU Men's Tennis Sweeping Final Day Of Spring Break Trip

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The No. 15 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team wrapped up action during the Spring Break trip with a pair of matches on Friday. The Bears opened the day with a 5-2 win over No. 36 Southwestern University and finished the day with a 4-1 against Concordia-Texas.

WashU 5, Southwestern 2
The Bears claimed the doubles point to jump out to a 1-0 lead. The duo of senior Colin Fox and first-year Jeremy Sieben took the 6-3 win at the top spot, while sophomore Drew Koval and junior Nathan Tam clinched the point with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles. The Pirates were able to pick up a 6-4 win at No. 3 to prevent the doubles sweep.

With the slim lead, WashU did not want to take any chances and got wins at the top four singles matches. The Bears were leading 3-1 before the clinching match came in.

Senior Colin Scruggs claimed the 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1, while first-year Jeremy Sieben gave up just three games en route to his 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.

Southwestern claimed a straight-sets win at No. 6 before sophomore Avi Mahajan won 7-5, 6-2 to clinch the match for the Bears. Senior Case Fagan added one more point for WashU with a 6-1, 6-7, 6-1 win at No. 3. The Pirates closed out the match with a three-set win at No. 5.

WashU 4, Concordia 1
Like in its first match of the day, WashU secured the doubles point with wins at the top two doubles matches. Fox and Sieben, as well as Koval and Tam, each earned a 6-4 win to see WashU take the 1-0 lead.

With a shake-up in the lineup, the Bears sent a nearly completely different singles lineup than the first match. Junior Daniel Radke and first-year Hans Deng each gave up only one game in their straight-set wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. The Tornados picked up a win at No. 1 singles, but Tam clinched the match at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-4 win.

The matches at No. 3 and No. 6 went unfinished.

WashU will have nearly two weeks before its next match on Saturday, March 28, when it travels to Crawfordsville, Ind., to take on Wabash. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
