GEORGETOWN, Texas – A sweep of doubles set the tone for singles as the No. 15 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team took down UAA opponent and No. 3 Case Western Reserve on Thursday morning on the campus of Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.
All three doubles matches came down to the wire, with seniors
Eric Kuo and
Colin Scruggs picking up a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles. Senior
Colin Fox and first-year
Jeremy Sieben claimed a 7-6 (6) win at the top doubles spot, while junior
Nathan Tam and sophomore
Drew Koval helped complete the sweep with their 7-6 (3) win at No. 3.
With the doubles point secured and leading 1-0 going into singles, WashU needed just three singles match wins to complete the upset. Sophomore
Avi Mahajan won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 5, while the Spartans got the win at No. 6 singles by an identical score.
CWRU tied the score at 2-2 with a win at No. 4. However, the Bears answered back with a 6-4, 6-3 win by Kuo at the top spot.
Just one point away from their second upset over a top-10 team in two days, Sieben won his first set at No. 3, 6-4. He dropped his second set 6-2 before rebounding and clinching the win with a 6-2 victory in the third set.
Although CWRU eventually picked up a three-set win at No. 2 singles, WashU had already secured the match, 4-3.
The Bears will wrap up their Spring Break trip on Friday, March 13, when they take on No. 36 Southwestern at 2 p.m. and Concordia University of Texas at 5 p.m.
